I would argue with your headline, Jason, but not with your noting the velocity of financial transactions. I would consider "Consolidation" only to include the mergers and acquisitions. Tell us how many of those there have been.

Thanks Bill. Good clarification. Maybe I was trying to grab headlines. Of the 51 "events", I count 34 M&As since 2005.

Only a few of the mergers out there in the applications space have really been of any real scale though Jason. Most of the acquisitions have been pick-ups of fading companies or niche plays to gain technology. Off hand I would say that these are the most important ones:

Taleo/Vurv
Kenexa/BrassRing
ADP/Virtual Edge
Stepstone/Executrack
Kronos/Deploy Solutions

Notice the concentrations in recruiting? I am sure that a few more are in there I may be missing.

Nice observation. Yes...good recruiting capabilities have taken many years to build and perfect. Contrarily, performance and goal management capabilities are relatively easy to build and therefore why most have chosen to build versus buy.

I am just now writing an article on this topic for IHRIM.link and you're helping me out, Jason! Thanks. I observe that there have been a few acquisitions where the buyer has ended up doing a complete rewrite.

I wouldn't say all of the major acquisitions have been recruiting-centric as there's been more than a few performance and compensation pick-ups as well.
