The Worst Evaluators of Talent

Cuban You guessed it…the worst evaluator of your performance is…you yourself.  We all have a tendency to set a high value on our self-worth while typically devaluing our weaknesses.  Mark Cuban, the outspoken (and very rich) owner of the Dallas Mavericks had a great post about this on his blog recently

"…I learned a lot from Don Nelson when he was coach and GM of the Mavericks. He told me something early on, that opened my eyes. I forget the exact conversation, but we were talking about players, and I asked him why he didn’t talk to a specific player about something that was going on. What he said was that “The worse evaluator of talent is a player trying to evaluate himself.”

I totally agree with you. We tend to either under or over value our talents (or we don’t even recognize them to begin with). I’m thinking about exactly those kinds of things right now and just read a book that has really helped me start to figure out how to identify talents/stregths in employees (“Now Discover Your Strengths”).
