Is Barry Bonds Worth His $15.8 Million Salary?

This is the question my fellow Torero and friend Greg Bettinelli asks (and answers) today as we start the 2007 baseball season. I would agree with Greg that Barry Bonds is well worth his salary. Other things that should be noted in Greg’s equation is the ticket sales for the other 81 road games (where I would attribute 3-5% of tickets sales attributed to Bonds and his pace to break Hank Aaron’s HR record later this year) and the correlating effect that the press and media has on souvenir sales.

By the way, with tax season upon us did you know that baseball players must pay income taxes in every state where they play a game. That’s 15 540s for Barry Bonds (assuming he plays in each of those states).

*It should be noted that I am a born and raised San Francisco Giants fan, although not necessarily a Barry Bonds fan.

It goes back to what the organization is willing to pay. Are they taking into account that having Barry Bonds will increase ticket sales? Probably. Then there is the fact that he will most likely break the all-time home run record this year. Everytime his name is used for this record, ‘San Francisco’ will be included. That is an incredible amount of publicity for a city! How do you put a price on that?

So when you ask if the person Barry Bonds is worth it, baseball (ann other sports) have become a very lucrative business. Finding ways to justify spending seems to be easy f or them.
